Governors are no longer Chief Security Officers - Enugu House of Assembly laments

The lawmakers said they can no longer fold their arms and watch Enugu people being killed by marauding herdsmen The Enugu state House of Assembly, while deliberating on the 2018 state budget, claimed that governors no longer have power to control security agencies in the state except for neighbourhood watch groups. Vangaurd reports that the Assembly said states are open to attacks from herdsmen which is unfortunately now spreading across the nation and governors can't do much about it because they no longer have power to security.

The House therefore concluded that going by the menace of Fulani herdsmen in different states, it would henceforth make allocations of fund to beef up state neighborhood watches which is the only security apparatus in the control of the state government. The lawmakers took the decision at plenary on Tuesday, during the deliberation of the 2018 appropriation bill presented to it by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi on December 28 2017. The House therefore agreed that funds would be channeled to reposition the state neighborhood security under the Ministry of Human Capital Development and Poverty Reduction.

Members said they can no longer fold their arms and watch Enugu state people being killed by marauding herdsmen. Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that the Ohaneze Ndigbo has rejected the planned establishment of cattle colonies as a way of finding peace and putting an end to constant clashes between farmers and herdsmen. The Enugu state chapter of the apex socio-cultural Igbo group in a statement on Wednesday, January 17, said the establishment of cattle colonies was against the laws of the bible. It alluded to the clashes in the middle belt especially in Benue state and said the same will not be allowed in the southeast region.
