Amaechi, Wike convoys in bloody clash

A bloody clash was on Saturday recorded in Port Harcourt, Rivers State between the security convoys of Governor Nyesom Wike and that of the Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi. Security officials of Governor Wike allegedly attacked  the convoy of the Transportation Minister. Amaechi’s escort details were, however, unlucky during the 3 p.m. attack, as one of them, Sgt. Eteng Ewelu, was battered, with blood on his face, while the AK-47 rifle of Sgt. Princewill Ubaji was snatched, while being forcibly disarmed. Two Army Officers Remanded For ‘Theft’ Of N339m Pension Funds

A high court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) ordered the remand of four people over their alleged roles in the stealing of N339 million military pension funds. The suspects are Ishaka Yakubu (wing commander), Akinbamidele Odunsi (lieutenant commander), Abidemi Aderemi Kolade and Violet Ofoegbunam. The suspects are said to have collected monies meant for payment of death benefits to deceased army officers and converted same to personal use. They were arraigned on Thursday before D. Z. Senchi, the judge handling the matter. The defendants pleaded “not guilty” after the charge was read to them. Thereafter, Steve Odiase, counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), asked the court to remand the accused persons in custody pending trial. Odiase also noted that Yakubu and Odunsi had on several dates refused to come to court. For that, he asked the judge, to impose stringent bail conditions on them. The Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) yesterday released a report showing how over 1.4 million illegal rosewood logs from Nigeria, worth $300 million, were laundered into China, The Guardian reports. Vice-President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo has called on Nigerian youths to utilise the productive period of their lives, noting that while time waits for no one, obtaining a degree certificate does not always translate to success in life. Osinbajo spoke at the 10th convocation of the Lead City University, Ibadan where 590 students were awarded first degree certificates in various disciplines on Thursday. Among them, 39 students graduated in the first class category. Miss Mary Olukorede was adjudged the best graduating female while Amedu Anthony was announced as the best graduating male student. NSCDC To Deploy 11,000 Personnel, 30 Sniffer dogs, 4 Drones To Anambra

Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), has said that it would deploy a total of N11, 000 personnel for the conduct of the Anambra State governorship election slated for November 18, 2017. Also, 30 sniffer dogs and four drones would be deployed, including ambulances and medical teams as well as 115 vehicles, 15 of which would be deployed to the riverine areas of the state. The Anambra State Commandant of the Corps, Mr John Ahwen disclosed this to newsmen in Awka, yesterday, explaining that the move was to ensure total security of lives and properties during the exercise. Ahwen said the officials to be deployed to the state would be moved from seven states namely Enugu, Abia, Ebonyi, Rivers, Edo, Delta and Imo. According to Ahwen, the Deputy Commandant-General in charge of Operations, Mr Hillary Madu, would be the ground commander and would be assisted by two Assistant Commandants-General.
