Catholic bishops tell INEC, FG to tackle underage registration

atholic Bishops in Nigeria under the aegis of Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) Friday asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the federal government to tackle reported alleged cases of underage registration by officials of the commission. The CBCN, in a communique issued at the end of its first plenary meeting of the year in Abuja, but made available to our correspondent in Ado Ekiti on Friday by the Bishop of Ekiti diocese, Most Rev Felix Ajakaye, decried reports that some eligible Nigerians were unable to register to vote due to lack of facilities.  The communique signed by the Archbishop of Jos, Most Reverend Ignatius Ayau Kaigama (President) and the Bishop of Ikot-Ekpene, Most Reverend Camillus Raymond Umoh, Assistant Secretary, CBCN said: "We hear of the registration of under aged persons. FG Rejects Transparency International’s Corruption Index

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday hit back at Transparency International over its corruption perception index indicating that corruption was getting worse in Nigeria. Buhari, in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity Malam Garba Shehu, described as misleading and unfair, the ranking of 148 given Nigeria out if 180 countries surveyed. Shehu said President Buhari asked the anti-corruption watchdog to focus on facts, not fiction. He said while the Presidency noted and welcomed constructive criticism, the organization has a responsibility to reflect the larger picture of the concrete and verifiable achievements of the administration since it came into office. 

Nigeria declares hate speech as act of terrorism

The Federal government has declared hate speech as an act of terrorism and warned that it will, henceforth, prosecute those who indulge in the practice. Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said henceforth, offenders of dangerous comments would be treated in accordance with the 2011 terrorism Act.  The minister who spoke yesterday at the second National Conference of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Kano reminded that government directive from National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to sanction any broadcast station who allows its airwave to be used as medium for promotion of hate speeches, is still in place. The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, on Friday accused the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government of only showing decisive interest in launching intensive manhunt when cases of cattle rustling are involved without doing as much to protect innocent civilians who are sent to early graves by armed hoodlums operating as if they have licences to kill. YUSUF BUHARI SLUMPED AND DIE

The son of Buhari, Yusuf Buhari on Tuesday night had a bike accident around Gwarimpa area in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja. The statement further said that the President’s son had undergone surgery at a clinic in Abuja and now in a stable condition. After been discharged, he was reported to have been convulsing. Today 20th Feb 2018,he was said to be on a check up when he suddenly slumped, the doctors did all they could but couldn't save him. This was confirmed by the media and publicly secretary to the president,Malam Garba Shehu. The president and first lady are yet to comment on the issue and the Aso villa seem to be mourning.

AFTER five years of absence from the activities of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN) has rejoined the association. This was disclosed in a statement signed by the Special Assistant (Media and Communications) to the CAN president, Pastor Adebayo Oladeji. The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria were said to have, in a letter dated September 24, 2012, and signed by Most Reverend Ignatius Kaigama, the President, Catholics Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBNC) and addressed to the then CAN President, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor announced its withdrawal from the organisation.
